Abstract 

This paper studies the disruptions to maritime logistics service through the Panama Canal in 2023 as a result to the extended severe drought that affected Central America. 

Capacity constraint and increased wait times to proceed through the canal system have taken a toll on the efficacy of the canal in the maritime logistics system of the Western Hemisphere. 

We specifically study effects on container vessel traffic. We quantify the magnitude of disruptions using a couple different metrics through a comparison of 2023 to a baseline of 2022 on a monthly basis in both directions. 

We use a couple of different datasets derived from AIS data in combination with ancillary datasets on vessels and operators. 

Using tabular and graphical information, the analysis underscores the scope of the disruptions over time, and also finds differences based on classes of vessel sizes, and also identifies effects tied to the world regions served by the affected services. 

Strategic responses are studied. Business, policy and economic development implications are discussed in the paper.
